The material

A timeless roofing material.

From the terracotta rooftops of the Mediterranean to contemporary Australian homes, clay tiles have an enduring architectural appeal.

La Escandella tiles are available in a range of profiles, colours and finishes. Traditional unglazed tiles provide the warmth and variation associated with classic Mediterranean architecture, while glazed finishes can create a cleaner, more contemporary look.

This versatility makes terracotta equally at home on a coastal residence, Mediterranean-inspired build, traditional home or modern architectural project.

  • New terracotta roofs on premium and architect-led builds
  • Full re-roofing where an existing tile roof has reached its end
  • The full La Escandella spread of profiles, colours and glazes
  • Ridge, valley and flashing detail finished to the same standard as the field

Provenance

Spanish-made La Escandella terracotta.

La Escandella has been manufacturing terracotta roof tiles in Spain for generations.

In Australia, the range is supplied by our supplier, Bristile Roofing and includes profiles and finishes selected for Australian building conditions.

Unlike surface-coloured roofing materials, the colour of natural terracotta comes from the clay itself and the firing process. This gives the material its characteristic depth and allows a quality terracotta roof to retain its appearance as it ages.

Supply & installation

Supply & installation by Wells Roofing.

The Wells family has been roofing homes across Melbourne and Victoria for more than 40 years.

We work with homeowners, builders and architects from initial roof and tile selection through to estimating, supply and installation.

Our team understands that the finished result depends on more than choosing a good tile — set-out, detailing and the quality of installation all matter.

For projects across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, Wells Roofing can assist with selecting the right La Escandella profile and finish for the home, provide a detailed quotation and manage the complete installation.

Our guarantee

Backed in writing.

Terracotta carries its own warranties, separate from our slate work. Here they are in plain terms.

100-year product warranty
La Escandella terracotta carries a 100-year product warranty. We supply the documentation with the roof, so the cover is yours on paper rather than on trust.
Lifetime colour warranty
The colour of natural terracotta comes from the clay and the firing, not from a surface coating — so it is warranted for the life of the tile and cannot fade off the way a coloured finish does.
Workmanship guarantee
Our installation is guaranteed in writing. If something we fitted fails because of how we fitted it, we come back and put it right.
Documented handover
Every project finishes with photographs of the completed roof and the warranty paperwork in your hands.

Common questions

Questions we’re often asked.

Where can I buy roof tiles in Melbourne?

We supply premium natural Spanish slate directly to homeowners, architects, builders and trade across Melbourne and Victoria, including CUPA PIZARRAS. For terracotta and concrete we supply the Bristile range, including La Escandella terracotta. Contact us for samples, specification support and current lead times.

Can you paint terracotta roof tiles?

Terracotta can be coated, but we generally advise against it on quality roofs. Coatings sit on the surface, weather unevenly and need redoing every several years. Where tiles are sound, cleaning and re-bedding the ridging usually gives a far better and longer-lasting result.

How do you replace broken roof tiles?

The tile is lifted clear of the ones interlocking with it, the fixing released, and a matched replacement bedded in. The hard part is matching — profile, colour and age all matter. On slate and premium tile we hold matching stock so repairs disappear rather than stand out.

How do you fix leaking roof tiles?

Most tile leaks are not the tiles at all — they are flashings, valleys, ridge bedding or pointing. We diagnose the actual entry point rather than patching the nearest tile, because a misdiagnosed leak reappears in the next heavy rain.

How do you clean roof tiles?

Low-pressure washing and, where needed, a suitable treatment for moss and lichen. High-pressure cleaning strips the surface off concrete tiles and forces water under the laps, so it should be avoided on any roof you intend to keep.
